In our section on Turin, New York, we talk about skishoeing on the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau and all the snow it gets. Pulaski lies on the western edge of the plateau just a few miles from Lake Ontario along I-81 half way between Syracuse and Watertown. This is an area know for its salmon fishing, as they venture out of the lake and up the Salmon River skirting town. The 1880 House in Pulaski makes for a pleasant stay with their bountiful pots of soup and other fine food.

Several trail networks await in the area. About 8 miles east, Chateaugay State Forest features 7 miles of marked forest trails with an additional 8 miles of unplowed, unmarked roads, all designed for moderate to expert skiers, meaning they work well for skishoeing.

Slightly further way, Winona Forest Recreation Area, also known as Tourathon Trails, has 31 miles of groomed trails for all levels of skiers, but you can find plenty of places to go off trail. Try the Tourathon race course loop. For a short but scenic jaunt near town, venture to Selkirk Shores State Park on Lake Ontario.
